Is selling handmade jewelry profitable?
Find out if selling handmade jewelry is profitable, with what three real pieces earn an hour.
7 min read · Updated · Prices checked
You keep
$27.72 an hour
The short answer
It can be. At the calculator's price, three real pieces leave you $27.72, $28.65 and $37.49 an hour on Etsy. That is after materials, fees and overhead. Slow work, low prices and shop orders at half price leave much less, as little as $3.91 an hour. What you keep depends on your price, your speed and where you sell.
What does "profitable" mean to you?
You may be asking this after a long day that left very little. Or after months of making things you love, without knowing if they pay. Either way, it's a fair question. It doesn't mean you're doing something wrong.
"Profitable" means different things. Some makers want to cover their supplies and the booth fee. Some want to be paid for their time. Some want a business with money left over. All three are fair goals.
Here is the lowest price for each goal, for three real pieces sold on Etsy. Every price counts materials, overhead and Etsy fees.
| Piece | Covers what you spend | Also pays you $20 an hour | Also leaves 20% profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clay dangle earrings, per pair | $1.99 | $7.51 | $9.64 |
| Glass bead bracelet, per bracelet | $3.86 | $11.23 | $14.41 |
| Silver hoops, per pair | $11.49 | $17.01 | $21.84 |
- Covers what you spend. Materials, overhead and fees are paid. Your time is not.
- Also pays you. Your time is paid at $20 an hour.
- Also leaves profit. This is the calculator's price. The profit is for the business, on top of your pay.
For scale, the median pay for jewelers and precious stone and metal workers was $25.26 an hour in May 2025 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). That is an employee's pay, so treat it as a reference, not a target. Craftybase suggests $20 to $30 an hour as a fair starting rate for skilled work.
What do the same pieces earn an hour?
Fees are easy to miss until you see what actually reaches you. Here is what you keep for each hour of work, at the calculator's price.
It is what's left after materials, overhead and fees. It includes your 20% profit.
| Piece | Time each | On Etsy | At a market | To a shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clay dangle earrings | 15 minutes | $27.72 | $31.58 | $13.90 |
| Glass bead bracelet | 20 minutes | $28.65 | $32.53 | $12.48 |
| Silver hoops | 15 minutes | $37.49 | $44.72 | $3.91 |
Etsy takes 6.5% + 3% + $0.25 an order + $0.20 per item sold. A card reader like Square takes 2.6% + $0.15 an order. A market keeps more of the same price because its fees are lower.
The last column is a shop paying half your price, with no fees. It pays the least. The silver hoops keep $0.98 a pair at that price, or $3.91 an hour, because materials cost $9.44 a pair.
A shop order can still make sense if it brings you regular buyers. Know the number before you say yes.
Why does your speed change the answer so much?
If the price your time calls for feels too high for your buyers, you're not imagining the tension.
Take the clay dangles at $9.64 a pair on Etsy. At 15 minutes a pair, you keep $6.93 a pair, which is $27.72 an hour. That $6.93 stays the same however long the pair takes.
| Time for each pair | Kept each hour at $9.64 | Calculator's price |
|---|---|---|
| 15 minutes | $27.72 | $9.64 |
| 30 minutes | $13.86 | $16.73 |
| 45 minutes | $9.24 | $23.83 |
That is why a slow piece is hard to price. At 45 minutes a pair, the price that pays you $20 an hour and leaves profit is $23.83.
You can price it higher. You can simplify it so it takes less time. Or you can decide some hours are for love, not pay. All three are fair choices.
Over a month, 40 pairs at 15 minutes each is 10 hours of making. At $9.64, that leaves $277.20 after materials, fees and overhead. To keep $1,000 a month, you would sell 145 pairs, about 36 hours of making.
What does a craft fair day leave?
A market day can feel busy and still pay little. Here is how to see it in numbers.
This is an example day, not a claim about what booths cost. The booth is $150, travel is $20 and other costs are $30. You sell 20 pieces at $28. Each cost you $6 to make. The day is 8 hours.
- Sales
- $560.00
- Booth fee
- $150.00
- Travel and other
- $50.00
- Cost of pieces
- $120.00
- Card fees
- $17.56
Left after costs$222.44
Card fees at Square rates, checked Sep 2026.
Sales are $560. Card fees are $17.56. After every cost, the day leaves $222.44.
The first 10 pieces only cover the day's costs. Paying yourself $20 for each of the 8 hours takes 18 pieces. Sell 10 and the day leaves $11.22, or $1.40 an hour.
The calculator counts your hours at the booth. Driving, setup and the hours you spent making the pieces come on top of that. Count them in the hours you enter.
What if my price is lower than the calculator's?
If you worry a higher price will turn buyers away, that worry is real. No calculator can tell you what a buyer will pay.
It can show what a lower price costs you. Say you charge $8 for the clay dangles on Etsy. You still keep $21.78 an hour, so your time at $20 an hour is covered, with $0.45 a pair to spare.
The calculator's $9.64 adds $1.64 a pair. At 40 pairs a month, that is $65.60 a month.
You don't have to jump to it. You can move toward it in small steps, and watch what happens to your sales.
What makes your profit hard to see?
- Counting sales, not what's left. The example day brought in $560 and left $222.44. Look at what's left.
- Fees that come out first. Etsy and card fees are taken before the money reaches you. Look at your deposits.
- Hours you don't count. Driving, setup and making stock are work too. Leaving them out is your call. Just know what it hides.
- One day, not the year. A single market can mislead you in either direction. Add up the year so far.
- Pieces that don't sell. Unsold stock is money already spent. Count it when you judge a month.
